Job Details
- Plans and provides comprehensive nursing care including executing Licensed Independent Provider’s orders, dispensing and administering medications, and assisting Licensed Independent Provider in examinations and treatment of patients.
- Applies nursing and supervisory techniques required in the care, treatment and referrals of inmates/residents.
- Performs all technical/clinical procedures within the scope of education and licensure.
- Attends sick call with the physician to see inmates/residents; prepares list of inmates/residents to be examined; prepares examining room and equipment.
- Operates pill call, dispenses medication and documents as required by applicable policies and/or procedures.
- Calls Licensed Independent Providers for medication and treatment orders, and/or other emergencies.
- Examines and assesses new inmates/residents with illnesses or injuries or those who become ill or injured; refers inmates/residents to emergency room or other appropriate healthcare facility as required.
- Performs emergency procedures as needed and notifies Licensed Independent Provider for treatment orders.
- Assists in coordinating professional medical services provided by contract personnel and ensures their needs are addressed.
Job Requirements
- Graduate from an accredited college, university or nursing program with a degree/diploma in nursing.
- Must possess current licensure in the state of employment (Ohio).
- One year of professional nursing experience preferred.
- A valid driver's license is required.
Additional Details
- Monitors inmate/resident inpatient hospitalizations for early releases when appropriate.
- Provides guidance, supervises and monitors nursing care provided by licensed vocational/practical nursing staff and non-licensed medical staff.
- Maintains good working relationships with facility staff, nursing staff, contract providers and outside provider agencies.
- Utilizes established corporate, facility and correctional policies and procedures in decision making, using sound independent judgment.
- Regularly evaluates provision of medical services to prevent inappropriate use or duplication.
- Maintains absolute security and confidentiality of all medical records.
- Assists Health Service Administrator with review of medical files to ensure all provided services are documented.
- Closely monitors all potential catastrophic illnesses.
- Audits pharmacy use for adherence to formulary as directed or required.
- Complies with all applicable pharmacy laws, especially those covering controlled substances.
- Observes and records inmate/resident behavior.
- Inspects medical unit for items that could be used as contraband; securely stores or safely disposes of supplies and equipment.
- Provides health counseling and health education on individual or group basis as required.
- Assists Health Service Administrator to prepare and maintain various records, reports and logs using appropriate grammar.
- Reads, analyzes, comprehends and interprets medical and technical procedures, governmental regulations, legal and non-legal documents.
- Reviews, processes and responds (via corporate counsel) to lawsuits; attends court hearings when necessary.
- Evaluates and recommends physical safety requirements necessary to provide a safe working environment.
- Facilitates NCCHC/ACA/JCAHO accreditation of the medical program by providing required level of efficiency and approved medical services.
- Prepares and disseminates safety and accident reports as required; takes appropriate action in serious and unusual incidents and emergencies.
- Escorts inmates/residents or coordinates their movement to and from different areas for medical treatment.
- Performs searches of people and objects capable of concealing contraband, detecting and identifying objects.
- Engages in functions in confined areas including working rotating shifts and physically checking doors, windows and other areas to verify security.
- Takes appropriate action to prevent or diffuse potentially disruptive situations.
- Performs rescue functions at accidents, emergencies and disasters including administering basic emergency medical aid and evacuating people from confined areas.
