Job Description

This full-time, contract role offers a rewarding opportunity to provide 1:1 American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation services within a K-12 school setting. The position focuses on fostering successful communication and learning for a Deaf or Hard of Hearing student throughout the academic year. Working Monday through Friday during regular school hours, you will play a critical role in ensuring equal access to educational content and social interaction.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide real-time interpretation of spoken English into ASL (or other communication methods per IEP) and vice versa during classroom instruction, school activities, and other educational settings.
• Support the students comprehension of class content, assignments, and social engagement.
• Collaborate with educators, special education staff, and support personnel to implement accommodations and instructional strategies aligned with the students needs.
• Maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries in compliance with FERPA and IDEA regulations.
• Participate in Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings to offer communication-related insights.
• Prepare for classroom materials in advance to ensure accurate interpretation.
• Encourage the students independence and self-advocacy within the school environment.

Qualifications:

• Fluency in ASL with a minimum Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) score of 3.5; Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or EIPA certification accepted.
• High school diploma or GED required; associate or bachelors degree in ASL Interpreting, Deaf Studies, or a related field preferred.
• At least 1 year of experience working with school-aged children in an educational setting is preferred.
• Solid understanding of Deaf culture and the unique educational needs of students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, along with professionalism, discretion, and adaptability in a dynamic classroom environment.
